Get The Look!

Try the geek look, and for cheap!

Geek it out.

It’s back to school time, well not for me anymore. But many students are getting ready to start hitting the books again. You know what that means… the mall and Wal-mart will be unbearably crowded for the next few weeks. Get ready to fight for the last pair of those buy-one-get one shoes.

But if you do venture out into the warzone, you might want to think about adding a new style to your wardrobe. Add a little bit of class… and nerd. Yes, it is officially cool to be a nerd, or at least look like one. “Nerd chic” has invaded Hollywood and the fashion industry.

The current must-have Hollywood accessory is a pair of thick-framed glasses. Everyone is wearing them. Celebs want to let you know that they can be nerds too (even though they ditched school to make their millions). The popularity of shows like The Office and Glee and the Apple takeover further propelled the geeky new trend.

Don’t worry; dressing in full geek to rock the trend is not required. But the addition of some plaid garments or a fedora hat (as previously mentioned) would take you to the sexy side. This look is pretty much for everyone. No astigmatism is required.

To Fedora or not to Fedora?

Since I’ve moved down to Miami (about 3 months ago), there is one trend that took over the beach faster than the cast of Jersey Shore. Amongst all the Ed Hardy, string bikinis and Ray Bans, one fashion trend is completely unavoidable. South Beach has been taken over by storm, and I’m not sure if I’m ready.

The original fedora hat has gotten makeover and it has become the hottest summer accessory. Made of straw-like material, the hat is perfect for the outdoors and of course the beach. But is it wearable for everyday attire? Does it only work in tropical places, like Miami?  As a new “Miami-an” these are the questions I can’t quite seem to answer… well not yet.

Of course the celeb world has eaten this trend all up. Justin, Britney, Crack-han, Gwen Stefani, Jessica Alba, Zefron, RiRi, Reese and pretty much every other tabloid darling has rocked a fedora over the past few months. But what works for them doesn’t always work for us real people.

On a shopping trip this past weekend, I tried on my first straw fedora. And it wasn’t terrible. Actually, I kind of liked it. And, it was only about $10. I’m just not sure if I should take the leap of faith and make the purchase. I’m not sure if this is a look I can pull off. So I want to know what you think. How do you feel about this trend? Do you own one of these hats? Should I jump on this trend-wagon? Let me know what you think by answering the poll!

If you like this trend, check out the hat below!

Invasion of the Shape Bracelets!

Okay, so this blog is all about the latest trends in fashion and pop culture. But, there is a recent trend that needs to be addressed, and stopped ASAP. It's the invasion of the shape bracelets, and it's taking over the world quicker than Bieber Fever.

Perhaps you may have seen them; they come in all of the colors of the rainbow and in any shape imaginable. Birds, cats, dolphins, baseball hats, ice cream cones, deer, lips, palm trees, it's endless, really. They are little more than a curved color rubber band. But somehow they have taken over the fashion world.

Don't worry, that is not my hand.

So I'll let them slide when an 11 year-old-girl wears them, but when they appear at work (a top 20 ad agency) it is completely unacceptable. And yes, even guys wear them (convenient designs for your favorite football team).

Please, I beg you, (if you're reading this) resist the urge to put one of these hideous things on your wrist.  Save the $3 - $5 and buy a Cosmo or GQ or a McCafe. Please pass this post along, and hopefully we can preserve America's beauty.

Speaking of Shoes..

Aldo has reduced prices on a lot of great kicks. Click the picture below to see.

Battle of the Sneakers

Above is the Converse All Star, which retails for $39.99.

Above is a pair of Airwalk Kicks from Payless, which are on sale at $19.99.

So this next trend took me a little while to get used to. I wasn’t sure if the “Converse” look went with my style. My first thoughts were that they were kind of the “outcast shoe”, only for those going out of their way to be different. A few years ago, when my not-so-traditional-older brother got married, he wanted everyone to wear Converse. At the time, I put up some resistance.

Now, these shoes are everywhere, and they work with almost any outfit. They add a level of casualness and style that not many other shoes can accomplish. I can dress down my work outfit or add a touch of rockstar to my clubbing gear.

I willingly bought my own pair recently (for under $20), and have been happy every since. I found a pair that closely resembled the Converse All-Stars for half the price, and they have definitely become a staple in my everyday and nightlife fashion.

Sunglass Freak

Photobucket
Lady Gaga wears Carrera sunglasses in her “Bad Romance” video.

I admit it… I kind of have an obsession for sunglasses. When you put them on, you get an instant celeb-feel. But, I have this horrible problem: they always seem to disappear. I used to pay the crazy high prices and buy the designer brands, until I lost every pair I owned. $150 is way too much to throw away (approximately 33 double Cheeseburger meals from McDonald’s). And when I would finally be brave enough to jump back in Designerland, I would be terrified to wear the new pair. I wouldn’t wear them at the beach, the pool, the car (melting/cracking), or take them on trips…so I pretty much didn’t bring them anywhere.

That’s when I discovered generic sunglasses that mocked the look of designer brands. And they do a pretty good job at it! Now, I can rock multiple trends during the week:

Monday/Tuesday: is the “Rayban” look.

Wednesday/Thursday is the “Oakley” look.

The weekend belongs to the “Carerra” look.

And any night could have the “Kanye” look.

Not to mention, with the low costs, you can get any pair in any color. (Neon’s are good for clubbing or college football games!) I’ve gotten these types of sunglasses from a number of places including Target, Aldo, mall kiosks, Claire’s and American Eagle. All were under $20, and some were under $10. Click the links below to see some good deals I have found.

The white pair from American Eagle look like Oakleys!
